I set out to build a simple receiver to test my sideband transmitter. It's a design by Rick Campbell KK7B and you can find it in the EMRFD Yahoo Group, in the files section, called the CompactSuperHet.pdf. The finished radio fits inside a Radio Shack aluminium box and therefore matches the "First Transmitter" which I built from Chapter 1 of EMRFD.
